A newly uncovered Pentagon-backed propaganda network is using artificial intelligence (AI) to churn out pro-American military content targeted at Latin American audiences, raising serious concerns about the United States government’s expanding influence operations in the region.

The Intercept’s investigation has identified La Tilde, a Spanish and English-language news website that presents itself as a modern media brand for Latin American readers. However, the site is actually a product of the U.S. Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH).

La Tilde, whose name references the Spanish accent mark, pitches itself with the tagline “news with an accent” while quietly serving as a military messaging platform.

BrightU.AI‘s Enoch AI engine explains that La Tilde’s content reveals the website’s true purpose. Alongside random personal finance tips about “why instant payments matter,” the site publishes glowing accounts of U.S. military operations in the region.

One article describes the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as “The Perfect Operation,” praising its “coordination and accuracy never seen before.”

Another piece pushes joint U.S.-Panamanian jungle warfare training as a bulwark against Chinese influence, while conveniently omitting that such exercises have sparked protests over violations of national sovereignty.

A closer look at La Tilde reveals signs of AI generation

The site’s promotional video shows telltale signs of AI generation, including a newspaper with the incomprehensible headline “SO THEE HOUTIERRER TO TO GHAHOBATEE.”

Running articles through AI text detection services produced multiple hits indicating that the content was either partially or entirely machine-generated. Emerson Brooking, a former Department of War (DoW) cyber-policy adviser, described La Tilde as “AI all the way down.”

This shoddy craftsmanship matters because it represents a dangerous new capability. “If you can generate new content and even news fronts at the flip of a switch, your influence operations can shift target and focus much more quickly,” Brooking warned.

The Pentagon appears to be applying lessons learned from Russian and Chinese AI-powered propaganda networks.

The deception is thinly veiled. A small link at the bottom of La Tilde’s page reveals it is “a product of an international media organization publicly funded from the budget of the United States Government.” This identical disclosure language appears on two other Pentagon-sponsored propaganda sites previously exposed by The Intercept.

While technically informing readers of the source, the language is easily missed and allows the government to claim transparency.

SOCSOUTH, which executes special forces missions throughout South and Central America, declined to comment beyond reading the site’s disclosure statement. U.S. Southern Command denied involvement entirely.

La Tilde is pushing for aggressive planned expansion

Planned expansion appears aggressive. Analysis of La Tilde’s subdomains indicates the site will launch bespoke versions for readers in Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama and Peru. Each country would receive propaganda tailored to local audiences.

The historical context makes this deeply troubling. The joint military exercises La Tilde promotes include PANAMAX, which Panamanian opposition parties have denounced as a “camouflaged invasion.”

Participants include the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly the School of the Americas, whose graduates included thousands of death squad operatives and dictator Manuel Noriega.

An earlier report revealed that SOCSOUTH’s parent command, U.S. Special Operations Command, has been acquiring deepfake video technologies to “generate messages and influence operations via non-traditional channels.” La Tilde’s content appears to use low-effort AI tools rather than cutting-edge technology, but the intent remains clear: build an audience with generic material, then slip in explicit propaganda.

“The content is lazy, the AI is bad, and the required disclosures make the whole thing a farce,” Brooking said.

The farce, however, carries real consequences for Latin American readers who may not realize they are consuming Pentagon-generated misinformation designed to sell war.
