Israeli airstrikes killed 88 Palestinians in Gaza over 24 hours, including at least 12 children, as the United Nations warned of soaring malnutrition rates due to Israel’s blockade.
The latest bombardment struck homes, refugee camps and aid seekers, compounding a humanitarian catastrophe that has left hundreds of thousands at risk of famine. This escalation reflects Israel’s ongoing military campaign – backed by the U.S. – which has now killed over 58,000 Palestinians since October 2023 and pushed Gaza’s infrastructure to collapse.
Officials at Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital reported that an Israeli strike demolished a building in the Shati refugee camp, killing a 68-year-old Hamas legislative official, Mohammed Faraj al-Ghoul, along with a family of eight sheltering inside. Another attack in Gaza City’s Tel al-Hawa district wiped out 19 members of a single household, including eight women and six children. The Israeli military did not comment on these strikes but has repeatedly claimed it targets only militants – an assertion contradicted by the high civilian death toll and UN documentation.
At least six Palestinians were killed and 29 wounded while trying to access food over the past day, bringing the total aid-related deaths to 844 since May, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Witnesses describe Israeli forces firing live ammunition to disperse crowds near aid distribution sites run by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The UN reports higher figures – 875 deaths in six weeks – citing hospital records and survivor testimonies. Israel blames aid delays on the UN, but agencies say military restrictions and lawlessness hinder distribution. UN agencies warn that malnutrition among Gaza’s children has doubled since March, when Israel tightened its blockade. Nearly 10.2 percent of children screened by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in June were acutely malnourished, up from 5.5 percent in March. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) documented 5,870 cases in June alone – almost triple February’s numbers.
“Palestinian children in Gaza suffer immense pain,” warned Dr. Mads Gilbert in a UNRWA report, noting anemia rates of 72.8 percent and stunting in 31 percent of children under two.
The crisis stems from Israel’s 2007 blockade of Gaza after Hamas’ electoral victory, a move condemned as collective punishment by human rights groups. Before the current war, UN experts estimated Israel’s restrictions had already pushed 80 percent of Gazans into aid dependency. Today’s violence echoes past assaults – such as the 2014 war, when Israeli strikes killed over 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians – but with unprecedented destruction now rendering Gaza uninhabitable, according to the UN.
As Israel continues its bombardment unchecked by international action, Gaza faces annihilation. The UN warns indirect deaths – from disease, starvation and demolished hospitals – could push the toll near 600,000. With U.S. weaponry fueling the assault and global responses limited to rhetoric, Palestinians endure what officials call a “man-made disaster” with no end in sight.
